OpenAI gets final $30B investment from SoftBank
The funding brings SoftBank's total stake in the AI startup to 13%.
SoftBank Group announced on October 1, 2026, that it completed its $30 billion investment in OpenAI. The transaction represents the fulfillment of its commitment to the ChatGPT maker's latest funding round.
Earlier in 2026, OpenAI secured $122 billion in total commitments, which valued the company led by CEO Sam Altman at $852 billion. Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank were the primary investors in that round.
SoftBank, led by founder Masayoshi Son, previously agreed to deploy the capital in three tranches of $10 billion each through Vision Fund 2. To help finance the transaction, the firm raised $11.1 billion in the previous month through a high-yield corporate bond sale.
With this final payment, SoftBank's cumulative investment in OpenAI reached $64.6 billion, giving the Japanese conglomerate a 13% ownership stake in the artificial intelligence firm. SoftBank also canceled the remaining $10 billion of unused capacity under a $40 billion bridge loan secured earlier in the year.
