Shares hit $190.82 as Lumentum and Corning join high-density chip trial
Qualcomm shares climbed 7% to $190.82 in Monday afternoon trading following the announcement of a joint artificial intelligence optical interconnect demonstration with Lumentum Holdings and Corning. The stock outpaced the broader semiconductor sector, with the iShares Semiconductor ETF gaining 4% to $555.42 and the Invesco QQQ Trust rising 2.51% to $738.79.
The demonstration, presented at an optical communications conference in Málaga, Spain, combines a die-to-die interface subsystem from Qualcomm Technologies with Lumentum's laser-based optical platform and Corning's multimode fiber connectivity. The setup is designed for high-density AI scale-up architectures, targeting lower power, reduced area, and high bandwidth density.
Tony Chan Carusone, Senior Vice President for Technology at Qualcomm Technologies, stated that AI scale-up demands high bandwidth density while minimizing latency, power, and area. He noted that the collaboration highlights how Qualcomm's die-to-die interface technology can extend into optical links for future artificial intelligence system architectures.
The rally stood out from traditional mobile supply chain peers. Skyworks Solutions rose just 0.4% to $89.11, while Qorvo added 0.4% to $117.60. The demo does not include any commercial product release or customer order, leaving Qualcomm's core business primarily tied to handsets for now.
