Cocoa also recovered while arabica coffee fell 1.5% on September 21.
Raw sugar futures on ICE rose on Monday, September 21, 2026, recovering from a three-and-a-half-week low set earlier in the session. The contract closed up 0.12 cent, or 0.7%, at 17.48 cents per pound after hitting an intraday trough of 17.26 cents. White sugar dropped 0.3% to $507.50 per metric ton.
Brokers noted that raw sugar had hit a 15-month high earlier this month but faced selling pressure as investors took profits while evaluating weather damage linked to El Niño. The market remains supported by lower beet production in Europe, reduced 2026/27 crop prospects in Asia caused by dry weather, and lower output in Brazil due to heavy rainfall. In Indonesia, sugarcane output is expected to drop roughly 25% this year due to drought and forest fires.
London cocoa closed up £27, or 0.7%, at £3,961 per ton after touching a near six-week low of £4,036 earlier in the day. The New York cocoa contract gained 0.5% to $5,351 per ton. Cocoa arrivals at ports in Ivory Coast reached 16,000 metric tons for the week ended September 20, bringing the cumulative total since the start of the 2026/27 season to 20,500 tons. Below-average rainfall in Ivory Coast raised grower concerns over the main crop spanning September to February, while bank ING noted that comfortable short-term supplies and slow demand recovery have pressured prices despite an expected supply deficit for 2026/27.
In coffee markets, arabica fell 4.1 cents, or 1.5%, to $2.764 per pound after touching a three-month low of $2.7425. Robusta coffee dropped 1.7% to $3,337 per ton after plumbing an intraday low of $3,307. Prices were weighed down by rising ICE certified stocks, expanding Brazilian shipments, and favorable crop weather in both Brazil and Vietnam, where early flowering may lead to an earlier 2027 harvest.
