Raytheon, a business of RTX, has been awarded a contract from the Office of Naval Research to develop advanced target-detection capabilities for naval radar systems. The program runs through 2031, with development work taking place at Raytheon facilities in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and Andover, Massachusetts.

Under the agreement, Raytheon's Advanced Technology team will develop and test advanced signal and data-processing algorithms. These targeted software upgrades are designed to extend detection range, increase sensitivity, and boost overall radar efficiency before transitioning into the SPY-6 radar family and other future naval systems.

Modernizing fielded radar systems with software-first upgrades is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to deliver mission-ready capability. These enhancements will enable naval operators to detect smaller objects at greater distances and classify targets more quickly, providing the fleet with faster, more informed decision-making.

Colin Whelan, president of Advanced Technology at Raytheon

The contract builds on earlier research programs with the Office of Naval Research, including the ASPIRE and STORM initiatives for radar hardware and software. RTX reported more than $88 billion in sales for 2025 and employs over 180,000 workers globally.
