Brazilian telecom operator TIM and Qualcomm completed lab tests of Wi-Fi 8 technology at TIM's laboratory in Rio de Janeiro. The trials focused on evaluating the next generation of wireless networks under the IEEE 802.11bn specification, which remains in development.
The test setup integrated an XGS-PON infrastructure, artificial intelligence for network operation, and advanced cybersecurity layers. According to both companies, Wi-Fi 8 prioritizes Ultra High Reliability rather than standard speed upgrades. The standard targets expanded coverage, reduced interference, lower latency, and more efficient spectrum usage for online gaming, videoconferencing, streaming, and home automation.
The demonstration is an important learning and validation step for a technology that is still under development. Our focus is to understand, right now, how reliability features, smart interference management, and AI can translate into more consistent residential networks.
Diego Aguiar, head of sales for Qualcomm in Brazil, noted that improved spectrum usage and artificial intelligence will create new commercial opportunities for network operators. Both companies plan to expand tests to real-world residential environments to evaluate device performance.
