The carmaker could deploy up to 400,000 robots across its global manufacturing network.
Toyota Motor estimates that factory automation and robotics could require approximately 1 trillion yen annually starting around 2028. Based on an exchange rate of 157.18 yen per dollar reported on 18 September 2026, the annual outlay equals about $6.4 billion, or alternative conversions of $6.33 billion and 5.5 billion euros.
The automaker projects a total requirement of 400,000 robots across its production network. Toyota plans to deploy 150,000 units in its own operations and 250,000 units across group affiliates.
The automation plans span a manufacturing footprint of 60 plants worldwide, which also rely on 18,000 master craftspeople. The deployment is expected to feature wheeled humanoid robots, including the 50-kilogram model Eley. Meanwhile, rival Hyundai Motor Group has also set a planned factory deployment target of 2028 for humanoid robots.
