GM reveals new V-8 and diesel engines for 2027 trucks

General Motors unveiled a new engine lineup for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks. The update includes two brand-new V-8 engines, an upgraded turbocharged four-cylinder option, and a carryover inline-six diesel engine. The release marks GM's sixth generation of small-block V-8 engines, a design family the company has built since 1955.

GM President Mark Reuss announced the lineup at the automaker's Flint Engine plant. Development on the engines began in 2018. Together, Chevrolet and GMC have outsold Ford in full-size pickups since 2020, even as Ford's F-Series remains the single top-selling truck.

V-8 models account for 55% of Silverado sales and about 61% of Sierra 1500 sales. Diesel options represent another 35% of Silverado 1500 sales and 20% of Sierra 1500 deliveries. In the first half of the year, Sierra sales were roughly flat while Silverado volume dropped 4.6%.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has an open investigation into GM's current 6.2-liter V-8 engine following failure reports and a previous recall. GM's chief engineer for global engines stated that the company is cooperating with regulators and expressed confidence that the new engines will avoid similar problems.

General Motors stock has gained 18% over the last six months as automakers lean heavily on profitable truck lineups.
