Vale Base Metals cuts about 100 jobs in Canada
The workforce reductions in Ontario leave unionised roles untouched.
Vale Base Metals, a unit of Brazilian miner Vale, has cut about 100 positions at its operations in Sudbury, Ontario, according to local media reports published in October 2026. The company confirmed the workforce reduction through an official corporate statement, although it declined to disclose the exact headcount cut or the specific departments affected.
The job cuts did not affect union members. According to CBC News, zero members of USW Local 6500 were impacted by the layoffs. The union represents approximately 3,000 production and maintenance workers across Vale's Sudbury operations.
Vale Base Metals employs about 4,000 direct employees and roughly 1,000 contractors in Sudbury. The miner has not disclosed the severance costs associated with the move or any expected annual savings.
