Alibaba Group is testing an invitation-only Elite VIP membership program through its cross-border retail platform AliExpress, according to a report by The Information on September 30, 2026. The pilot is currently underway across four countries as the platform seeks to retain high-spending shoppers.
The program requires customers to spend at least $800 annually to qualify. Qualifying members pay an annual fee of $0 and receive a 5% discount on merchandise. AliExpress has set an internal target to sign up 1,000,000 Elite VIP users by the end of 2026.
The international expansion effort comes as AliExpress competes directly with Western e-commerce platforms. As of June 2026, AliExpress recorded 157.6 million monthly active users in Europe, compared to 193.9 million monthly active users for Amazon.
Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group generated $4.09 billion in revenue during the quarter ended June 30, 2026. That division result represented a 1.0% decrease year over year.
