Anthropic suspended free Claude Team tiers and API credit offers under its Claude Startups program just three days after expanding it. The move followed a surge of hundreds of thousands of applications that overwhelmed the startup-focused campaign.

The company had announced the expanded program on October 6, 2026, during SF Tech Week. It offered eligible businesses one free year of Claude Team for up to five premium users alongside $1,000 in API credits. Eligible businesses included those founded in the last five years or funded in the last two years.

Sarah Wolf, head of startup marketing at Anthropic, said on the evening of October 8, 2026, on X that the company had not properly set acceptance criteria, allowing non-startups to access the perks. The program received 21 times more applications in its first 48 hours than it had in the entire five months since its initial launch in May.

Anthropic stated it will email applicants who have not yet claimed benefits to re-verify their applications. Previously approved applicants who have not claimed perks are currently blocked from accessing them and may face rejection. Accepted members can still receive up to $45,000 in discounts and credits through the Claude Startup Stack.
