Anthropic has added Japanese energy and transport conglomerate Hitachi as a founding partner in its Critical Infrastructure Defense Program, Hitachi announced on October 9, 2026.

The cybersecurity initiative aims to strengthen defenses across critical infrastructure sectors such as utilities and transportation. The program integrates Anthropic's Claude artificial intelligence models into industry products and services.

Cybersecurity has become a central focus in artificial intelligence development following high-profile attacks carried out by AI agents earlier in the year. Anthropic had previously called for a slowdown in AI development to prevent similar incidents, warning about growing security risks.

For Hitachi, joining the defense program expands an ongoing partnership with Anthropic that began with a cooperation agreement in June.
