The automotive retailer reaches a footprint milestone across the Americas 47 years after its launch.
AutoZone celebrated the opening of its 8,000th store in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The milestone marks 47 years of expansion since the business started as Auto Shack on July 4, 1979, with a single store founded by J.R. Pitt Hyde III in Forrest City, Arkansas.
The new Murfreesboro location serves retail motorists and commercial clients with replacement parts and maintenance products. It also provides core customer programs such as complimentary battery testing and charging, Fix Finder diagnostic checks, and the Loan-A-Tool service.
Store number 8,000 is not the finish line. It reflects nearly five decades of growth driven by staying true to our Pledge and Values, investing in our AutoZoners and remaining focused on serving customers—our greatest opportunities are still ahead.
AutoZone leaders hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Senator Marsha Blackburn. As of August 29, 2026, the retailer operated 8,031 stores in total, consisting of 6,863 locations in the United States, 1,001 in Mexico, and 167 in Brazil.
