3M Company gained 1.4% on September 26 after Bernstein upgraded the stock from Underperform to Market Perform. Analyst Varun Govindaraj raised the price target from $145 to $171 following a recent meeting with management, citing a refreshed view of the operational turnaround.

Govindaraj lifted his organic growth projection to between 3.5% and 4%, up from roughly 3%. He noted that 3M is entering the early stages of a short-cycle recovery supported by artificial intelligence spending. He also pointed to an improved research and development model, lower drag from healthcare capital, and direct negotiations over PFAS personal injury claims, while expecting operating margins of about 25% this year.

Despite the upgrade, Bernstein stopped short of an Outperform rating due to valuation and lingering legal exposure. The company still faces more than 15,000 personal injury cases, with an October 2025 bellwether trial vacated and no replacement date set as of August. In the second quarter, adjusted organic growth was 5.4%, while GAAP operating margin dropped to 15.1% amid ongoing weakness in consumer electronics.

The stock trades at a forward GAAP price-to-earnings multiple of 21.92 times and a forward price-to-sales ratio of 3.33 times, which is roughly 27% higher than its five-year average of 2.62 times. Analysts project earnings to increase about 11% this year before moderating to around 6% by 2029. On the balance sheet, 3M holds $13.16 billion in debt against $5.30 billion in cash, while short interest stands below 2%.
