BP has asked the union at its Whiting, Indiana refinery to return to negotiations through federal mediation.
BP (BP) has asked the union representing workers at its Whiting, Indiana refinery to resume contract negotiations, according to a letter the company dated August 26, 2026 and addressed to representatives of USW Local 7-1.
In the letter, BP requested that talks continue through mediation by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. The company said it had agreed to use FMCS mediation at a meeting held at the governor's office on July 30, 2026. BP and the union last met on June 16, 2026 before the request was sent.
The Whiting refinery has been the site of a lockout that began on March 19, 2026, affecting some 800 unionized workers. The facility has a processing capacity of about 440,000 barrels per day.
As of the most recent reporting, USW Local 7-1 had not yet responded to BP's mediation proposal, and no date had been confirmed for any resumption of talks.
