The challenge targets rules carrying fines up to 10% of global turnover
Meta Platforms has filed a legal challenge against Ofcom, the UK media and communications regulator, over the enforcement framework of the Online Safety Act. British officials and politicians fear the action could delay the rollout of rules designed to protect minors from harmful online material.
The dispute centers on regulatory classifications and the enforcement mechanisms established under the legislation. Under the Online Safety Act, companies found in breach can face statutory fines of up to 18 million GBP or 10% of their qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever amount is higher.
The legal action also addresses the financial obligations imposed on major tech platforms. Ofcom established a worldwide qualifying revenue threshold of 250 million GBP for tech companies required to pay regulatory oversight fees to fund the supervision regime.
