Citi opens 30-day downside watch on Volaris
Analysts expect a negative reaction to third-quarter earnings scheduled for October 26.
Citi opened a 30-day downside catalyst watch on Mexican ultra-low-cost airline
Volaris, warning that its shares could react negatively to third-quarter earnings. The catalyst watch expires on November 7, while Volaris is scheduled to report its quarterly results on October 26.
In a research note dated October 8, Citi analysts warned that Volaris faces a tough backdrop for capacity discipline. Domestic demand is weakening, and expanding international routes brings risks tied to price elasticity, competition, and costs. The bank added that the carrier's fleet plan could raise cost pressures and compress margins amid higher fuel prices, alongside the risk that the US Federal Aviation Administration might downgrade Mexico's aviation safety rating to Category 2.
Citi maintained its neutral/high risk rating and a target price of $6.60 for Volaris US-listed shares, implying a 5.1% upside from the October 8 close of $6.28. Citi clarified that this 30-day alert is separate from its long-term fundamental rating.
For 2026, Citi forecasts a net loss of $266 million, or $2.31 per share, widening from a $104 million loss in 2025. It expects adjusted EBITDA to decline to $624 million from $792 million, and estimates a third-quarter net loss of $56 million. On October 6, Volaris reported that third-quarter capacity grew 11.1%, with domestic capacity up 11.0% and international up 11.2%. In July, the airline reinstated its full-year EBITDAR margin guidance at about 23%.
