Verizon shares slide 6% after SpaceX acquires spectrum
The acquisition of Grain Management's 800 MHz portfolio raises direct-to-cell competition concerns.
Shares of
Verizon fell 6% in pre-market trading on October 9, 2026. The move came after SpaceX agreed to acquire private equity firm Grain Management's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio, raising investor concerns over satellite-to-cellular competition.
Grain Management announced that the deal covers 100% of its nationwide 800 MHz holdings, providing up to 14 MHz of paired low-band airwaves, subject to Federal Communications Commission clearance. SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk stated on X that the agreement secures the spectrum needed for complete phone coverage across the United States without requiring specialized handsets. TD Cowen analyst John Blackledge described the deal as a warning that intensifies pressure on legacy carriers to negotiate roaming partnerships. Meanwhile, William Blair analysts noted that established operators remain vocal skeptics regarding whether orbital networks can match terrestrial quality.
The 6% drop is one of only three moves exceeding 5% for Verizon over the past year. Three months earlier, the stock fell 5.3% after being removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average and replaced by Alphabet. In a regulatory filing, Verizon disclosed an estimated non-cash loss of $700 million to $800 million for the second quarter from reclassifying assets as held-for-sale in its 50/50 international joint venture with BT Group. The company also reported $350 million to $450 million in severance costs and $200 million to $300 million in asset-rationalization charges.
Verizon recently beat first-quarter results and raised its full-year 2026 earnings per share guidance to roughly $4.95 to $4.99, while offering a dividend yield of around 6%. The median analyst price target sits near $50. At $43.18 per share, the stock is up 6.6% year to date but remains 16.1% below its 52-week high of $51.45 reached in September 2026. An investment of $1,000 in Verizon shares five years ago is currently worth $827.62.
