Medtronic announced on October 1, 2026, that the American Medical Association approved new Category I Current Procedural Terminology codes for two of its medical devices. The approvals apply to the Altaviva implantable tibial neuromodulation system for urge urinary incontinence and the Symplicity Spyral renal denervation system for uncontrolled hypertension. The new permanent codes will replace existing Category III temporary codes starting in January 2028.

Category I CPT codes designate procedures that the medical association considers widely performed and backed by solid clinical evidence. While these codes establish standard coding and can support physician payment and commercial insurer coverage decisions, they do not guarantee reimbursement, clinical superiority, or coverage.

Altaviva received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in September 2025 to treat urge urinary incontinence, a condition affecting 16 million adults in the United States. The device offers an expected therapy life of 15 years under typical settings. Symplicity Spyral, which finalized Medicare coverage in October 2025, uses radiofrequency energy delivered through a catheter to treat high blood pressure, backed by trial data across more than 5,000 patients and global clinical experience in over 40,000 patients.
