French authorities review privacy concerns as Meta and EssilorLuxottica control 76% of the market
On 18 September 2026, French authorities increased their oversight of smart glasses amid growing privacy concerns. The Paris prosecutor's office opened a criminal investigation into suspected sexual harassment involving smart eyewear devices.
France's data privacy regulator, the CNIL, also confirmed that it has received up to 10 complaints related to workplace data privacy concerning smart glasses.
The regulatory scrutiny emerges as Meta Platforms dominates the wearable category alongside EssilorLuxottica. The joint partnership holds a 76% global market share in smart glasses after shipping 7 million units in 2025.
