Microsoft Azure Red Hat OpenShift earns DoD IL5 status

Microsoft Azure Red Hat OpenShift for Microsoft Azure Government has achieved Department of Defense Impact Level 5 certification, Red Hat announced on September 24, 2026.

The IL5 classification defines security controls for sensitive and mission-critical cloud workloads. It covers higher-sensitivity Controlled Unclassified Information, Unclassified National Security Systems, and mission-critical information. The milestone follows the platform receiving IL4 certification in July 2024.

Launched in 2023, the jointly operated service allows United States government agencies to build, deploy, and run containerized applications on cloud infrastructure. The platform also complies with ITAR, DFARS, IRS 1075, and CJIS standards.

Leigh Madden, vice president of National Security at Microsoft, stated that achieving this certification represents a significant milestone in supporting mission-critical government workloads and allows federal agencies to innovate faster while meeting security standards.
