More than one million Canadians now take semaglutide amid limited generic options.
On 18 September 2026, Novo Nordisk confirmed that it maintains an established supply of its diabetes drug Ozempic across Canada. The announcement comes during increased demand for semaglutide and a limited supply of generic alternatives in the country.
Health Canada originally approved Ozempic in 2018. More than one million Canadians now use semaglutide for type 2 diabetes management, cardiovascular risk reduction, and kidney protection.
Patients have options, and when they choose Ozempic®, we are ready to meet their needs. We are committed to our patients, healthcare providers and our healthcare system, and prioritizing a stable and continuous supply of high-quality medications, including semaglutide, to support Canadians.
The Danish drugmaker employs approximately 67,900 people across 80 countries and distributes its products in around 170 markets. Novo Nordisk also noted that eligible Canadian patients outside Quebec can access discounts through a savings card program.
