The digital lender secures an investment banking license in Brazil.
Nu Holdings Ltd. agreed to acquire 100% of Banco Porto Real de Investimentos S.A. on 20 July 2026. The transaction provides the fintech with a full banking license in Brazil, allowing the company to retain bank in its brand name under local regulatory rules.
Banco Porto Real was founded in 1992 and converted into an investment bank in 2001. As of March 2026, the acquired entity held 32.1 million BRL in total assets and 31.4 million BRL in shareholders equity. It posted net income of 352 thousand BRL in the first quarter of 2026.
Before the acquisition, Banco Porto Real lifted its share capital on 10 June 2026 from 26.8 million BRL to 29 million BRL through an incorporation of reserves. The purchase price for the transaction was not disclosed by the parties.
Nubank counted 115 million customers in Brazil at the time of the announcement in July 2026. The completion of the deal remains subject to regulatory review and approval by the Central Bank of Brazil.
