Nvidia forms alliance to build power-flexible AI data centers

Nvidia, Google, and Emerald AI have created the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) to coordinate electricity consumption across AI data centers. The group has started construction on what it describes as the first purpose-built power-flexible AI data center, designed to adjust its power intake based on the needs of the electricity grid.

The initial power-flexible facility is located in Manassas. A key milestone for the project will be whether it secures faster grid interconnection terms or preferential utility tariffs by late 2026.

Electricity availability has become a primary bottleneck for large-scale AI infrastructure. The alliance plans to publish shared frameworks and standardized templates for grid-responsive facilities, incorporating input from utilities, regulators, and major AI infrastructure operators.

Nvidia supplies data center infrastructure across the United States, Asia, Europe, and other regions. The initiative integrates power flexibility alongside GPUs, networking, and software to help keep intensive deployments operationally viable under growing grid constraints.
