Toyota global sales fall 6.4% in August as output drops

Toyota Motor reported that its global vehicle sales fell 6.4% year over year in August 2026 to 790,743 units. Global vehicle production also dropped 5.9% to 700,860 units. The figures mark the second straight month of worldwide declines for both sales and production, according to company data released on September 29, 2026.

The automaker experienced steep drops in several major overseas markets. In China, vehicle sales plunged 22.8% to 118,449 units, marking a seventh consecutive month of falling sales in the country. Vehicle sales in the United States decreased 4.4% compared to the prior year, while sales in the Middle East tumbled 37.5% to 32,600 units.

Conversely, demand grew in select regions during the month. Domestic sales in Japan rose 9.1% to 105,067 units. European vehicle sales expanded 2.6% year over year to 78,527 units.

Manufacturing output contracted across key manufacturing hubs. Vehicle production fell 11.3% in China, 6.6% in the United States, and 1.7% in Japan compared to August of the previous year.
