Volaris to suspend Tulum flights from January 2027
The low-cost airline cited low passenger traffic and rising operating costs across the industry.
Mexican low-cost airline Volaris announced on September 30, 2026, that it will suspend all flight operations to and from Tulum due to low seat occupancy. Ticket sales for travel dates after the cut-off will stop this coming weekend.
The suspension takes effect on January 7, 2027. Operations at Tulum Airport will continue normally until that date, and existing reservations remain valid through January 7, 2027. Passengers affected after that date will receive rebooking options, electronic vouchers, or full refunds under the carrier's flexibility policies.
Volaris explained that the decision follows cost increases across the aviation sector. These include higher non-resident fees, airport usage fees (TUA), jet fuel prices, and air navigation charges. The carrier stated that it had to review route profitability and temporarily suspend flights with weaker load factors, adding that it hopes to return to the destination soon.
The move follows Aeromexico's decision earlier in the week to suspend flights to and from Tulum starting September 30, which that carrier attributed to current market conditions and route network optimisation.
