Braskem seeks bondholder deadline extension past election
The company restructures $11 billion in debt ahead of an October 9 key date.
Braskem will ask bondholders for an extension to negotiate key terms of its out-of-court restructuring plan, according to Pipeline on October 6, 2026. The petrochemical company wants to postpone talks until after the second round of Brazil's presidential election to gain clarity on the next administration and its impact on Petrobras.
The company has until November 22 to approve a restructuring plan. However, supporting creditors holding more than 66% of the debt can terminate the agreement starting October 9. Braskem plans to send a new proposal on October 6, 2026, to address its $11 billion debt.
Negotiators assess that a potential victory by Flávio Bolsonaro would make it harder for Petrobras to commit funds to Braskem. Sources stated that the Liberal Party candidate favors privatization, which creates uncertainty around the state-controlled oil company's future.
Foreign bondholders previously demanded that Petrobras inject $3 billion in capital if Braskem failed to meet certain financial targets in two years, which Braskem rejected. Petrobras is expected to signal willingness to participate in a market-based capital increase after five years to prevent dilution if targets are missed. After bondholders rejected an earlier plan seeking interest rate cuts, Braskem is prepared to maintain current rates and offer cash sweep mechanisms.
