Carlos Slim confirms work for Pemex and plans to lease idle drilling machinery
Grupo Carso is actively participating in infrastructure and energy initiatives under the administration of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. During his 2026 annual conference, Carlos Slim Helu, honorary chairman of Grupo Carso, confirmed that the conglomerate is building gas pipelines and developing projects for state oil firm Pemex.
The company is also moving to reactivate heavy assets in the hydrocarbons sector. Grupo Carso owns 19 drilling rigs, 12 of which remained completely idle for more than 12 years across previous government administrations.
To restart this idle capacity, Grupo Carso has deployed one rig for geothermal projects at the Cerro Prieto plant in Mexicali. The company is also in advanced talks with private energy companies working on onshore projects to lease out the remaining drilling fleet for exploration and production across Mexico.
