Moderna names Juan Andres as COO amid oncology expansion

Moderna announced on September 30, 2026, the creation of a Chief Operating Officer role to support its growing scale and product diversification. Juan Andres will return to the company to take the post on October 5, 2026. He will report to Chief Executive Officer Stéphane Bancel, join the Executive Committee, and oversee the global manufacturing organization.

The executive leadership shift comes as Moderna prepares for the potential commercial launch and manufacturing ramp-up of intismeran autogene, an oncology treatment co-developed with Merck (known as MSD outside the United States and Canada), following positive Phase 3 trial data. Moderna also noted that its infectious disease portfolio now includes five approved vaccines, following recent approvals by the U.S. FDA for its seasonal flu vaccine and by the European Commission for its combination flu and COVID-19 vaccine.

Andres spent nearly six years at Moderna after joining in 2017. He served as Chief Technical Operations and Quality Officer from 2018 to 2022, leading the rapid global manufacturing scale-up of the company's COVID-19 vaccine, before working as President of Strategic Partnerships and Enterprise Expansion until his departure in 2023.

Moderna also announced the retirement of Dr. Jerh Collins, Chief Technical Operations and Quality Officer, who joined the company in October 2022 after almost 30 years at Novartis. During his tenure, Dr. Collins adapted production for an endemic market, expanded facilities across the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, and created the manufacturing model for intismeran autogene.
