Volkswagen introduced the Saveiro Robust Etanol on Thursday, October 8, 2026. The new pickup configuration runs exclusively on biofuel and reaches dealerships in October with a suggested retail price of BRL 111,490. This makes it BRL 4,200 cheaper than the flex-fuel equivalent and the most affordable option in the entire Saveiro lineup.

The Saveiro is the first compact pickup admitted into the federal government's Carro Sustentável program. Under program rules, compact vehicles manufactured in Brazil with high environmental efficiency receive a zero rate on the federal excise tax (IPI). The qualification ceiling requires emissions of up to 83 grams of CO2 equivalent per kilometer on a well-to-wheel basis. The dedicated ethanol Saveiro emits 50 grams of CO2 equivalent per kilometer, compared with 106 grams for a comparable flex-fuel model.

The pickup keeps the 1.6 MSI engine with a five-speed manual transmission, delivering 116 horsepower and 16.1 kgfm of torque. Volkswagen's engineering team spent over 740 development hours calibrating parameters specifically for ethanol, including cold starts and drivability. City fuel economy improved by 5%, achieving 8.1 km/l in the city and 8.9 km/l on highways. Combined fuel economy rose from 8.1 km/l to 8.5 km/l, while energy efficiency improved from 1.83 MJ/km to 1.81 MJ/km.

Volkswagen stated that the Saveiro will remain in production through 2027, even after the arrival of the Tukan pickup, with its longer-term future to be evaluated afterward. With 44 years of Brazilian manufacturing, the Saveiro registered 67,753 registrations in 2025. Between January and September of this year, the model totaled 38,726 units sold in the Brazilian market.
