Aditya Birla seeks $1.5 billion loan to buy Shell unit
The Indian group is arranging rupee debt across 17 to 20 project vehicles to fund the purchase of Solenergi Power.
Aditya Birla Renewables is seeking 1.5 billion dollars in rupee loans from domestic lenders to finance its acquisition of
Shell subsidiary Solenergi Power, according to a report published by Reuters on October 9, 2026.
The planned borrowing will be spread across 17 to 20 special purpose vehicles that hold the underlying projects. Aditya Birla Renewables is targeting loan tenors covering up to 80% of the operational lifecycle of the assets. The group previously secured a 1.6 billion dollar bridge loan facility from MUFG Bank to support the deal.
The transaction covers 100% of Solenergi Power, the holding company for Shell renewable platform Sprng Energy in India. The two companies agreed on the sale in July 2026 at an enterprise value of 1.8 billion dollars, or 17,200 crore Indian rupees.
The portfolio represents 5.0 gigawatt-peak of total generation capacity, consisting of 3.3 gigawatt-peak in operation and 1.7 gigawatt-peak under construction or contracted. Shell originally acquired Sprng Energy from Actis in August 2022 for 1.55 billion dollars.
