Glencore is evaluating commercial and operational coal agreements in Venezuela's Zulia state, according to a report by Bloomberg News on September 30, 2026. Peabody Energy and Heeney Capital are also independently exploring potential deals in the area.

Venezuela holds an estimated 730 million metric tons of coal reserves as of 2026. However, its domestic mining industry operates far below past levels.

The country produced 350,000 short tons of coal in 2024. That output stands well below its historical peak of 8.7 million short tons recorded in 2000.

Any new mining venture would face significant local infrastructure hurdles. As of 2026, only 40% of Venezuela's electric generating capacity is operational.
