Keurig launches plastic-free Alta coffee pods at $1.37 each
The brewer rollout includes a $499.99 bundle and seaweed-coated rounds.
Keurig Dr Pepper has launched the Keurig Alta brewer and its plastic-free AltaRounds line. The single-serve coffee pucks use compressed grounds wrapped in a plant-based coating made from seaweed, eliminating the plastic cup entirely.
The company introduced an early access bundle for the Keurig Alta system at $499.99, which carries a stated total retail value of $650. By comparison, Keurig's best-selling traditional K-Cup machine retails for $219.99. The Alta machine delivers an extraction pressure of up to 10 bars.
AltaRounds debut with six beverage varieties packaged in standard retail boxes of eight pods. Most varieties cost $1.37 per pod. The pucks maintain freshness for nine months unopened and for 30 days after unwrapping. In home compost, the rounds begin to disintegrate within 12 to 16 weeks, reaching full biodegradation within six months.
The rollout follows past scrutiny over Keurig's environmental packaging claims. In 2024, Keurig Dr Pepper paid a $1.5 million civil penalty to settle SEC charges regarding statements about the recyclability of standard pods. The company had previously cut plastic content in its standard K-Cups by 18%.
