Colbún subsidiary Fénix seeks to triple capacity in Peru
General manager Juan Elías Salinas reported that future investment depends on long-term client contracts.
Fénix Power, a Peruvian subsidiary of Chilean power company
Colbún, aims to double or triple its installed capacity in Peru. Juan Elías Salinas, general manager of Fénix Power, told Gestión at the XXI Chile-Peru Business Council Meeting that the company has not yet set an investment figure, as decisions depend on securing long-term power contracts with clients.
Colbún presented a portfolio featuring more than six renewable generation initiatives in Peru across various development stages. These include the 660 MW Bayóvar+ wind farm in Piura, the 400 MW Algarrobal solar plant in Moquegua, the 238 MW Tres Quebradas wind project in Arequipa, the 315 MW Pampas wind farm in Ica, and the 250 MW Chasqui solar plant in Ica.
The company abandoned the 238 MW Naylamp wind project in Lambayeque, planned 10 kilometers southeast of Mórrope, after facing social viability issues during early stages. Meanwhile, Fénix is redesigning the layout of the 238 MW Tres Quebradas project in Arequipa. Salinas estimated that defining the engineering will take approximately one year or slightly more before resubmitting the initiative for permits.
Salinas noted that Fénix operates with a 25 to 30 year operational horizon and requires customer contracts exceeding 10 to 15 years to justify commitments. Fénix has no specific investment announcement planned for 2027 and plans decisions over five to ten year horizons. Salinas also called for stronger natural gas infrastructure and regulatory predictability in Peru, citing the negative economic impact of the March 2026 transport system outage at Transportadora de Gas del Perú.
