Mastercard acquires BVNK to expand into stablecoins
The payments network also rolled out AI services to protect agentic commerce transactions.
Mastercard announced the acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure provider BVNK to build out its digital asset settlement capabilities. The company also rolled out new AI-powered trust and intelligence services designed to monitor and secure agentic commerce transactions.
Management framed the BVNK acquisition and the new security tools as a response to changing digital asset regulations and payment risks tied to artificial intelligence. The move connects directly with Agent Pay upgrades and SoFiUSD settlement features.
The transaction expands Mastercard's higher-margin value-added services stack, which already represents 40% of its revenue through fraud, identity, and behavioral tools. The integration gives the payment processor more direct control over how blockchain flows interact with its core network safeguards.
The push into on-chain and AI-led transactions comes as Mastercard faces competition from rivals such as Visa and Stripe. The company also navigates evolving regulatory frameworks, alongside existing background risks that include corporate debt levels and insider selling.
