QuantumScape unveils QS PowerBlock for AI data centers
The solid-state battery system delivers four times the power density for 1 MW racks.
QuantumScape Corporation introduced on October 8, 2026, the QS PowerBlock, a solid-state lithium-metal battery reference design built for in-rack energy storage in artificial intelligence data centers. The modular system supports 800VDC architectures and is designed to supply power to 1 MW racks in next-generation facilities.
In testing against the Open Compute Project Open Rack V3 specification under simulated training workloads, the system delivered four times the power density and five times the runtime of current data center standards. The company's battery cells demonstrated thermal stability beyond 300 °C during third-party and customer tests, compared to approximately 180 °C where conventional lithium-ion cells usually enter thermal runaway.
Dr. Siva Sivaram, CEO and president of QuantumScape, stated that the company is bringing its solid-state technology to data center customers to support 800VDC designs for artificial intelligence infrastructure. QuantumScape has also joined the Open Compute Project as an official member.
The QS PowerBlock will be exhibited between October 12 and October 15, 2026, at the OCP Global Summit in San Jose, California. The design will be shown at booth C19, hosted by Megmeet, an official power system component partner for the NVIDIA MGX ecosystem.
