The system delivers over 3.5 MW of cooling with up to 2% higher efficiency alongside Eaton and Danfoss.
Trane Technologies announced on September 30, 2026, the successful laboratory demonstration of an 800-volt direct current (800 VDC) cooling architecture designed for next-generation artificial intelligence factories and gigawatt-scale data centers.
The company developed the proof-of-concept in collaboration with Eaton Corporation and Danfoss. By modifying an existing high-efficiency chiller to take an 800 VDC feed directly, the system delivered over 1,000 tons (3.5 MW) of cooling capacity while showing the potential for up to a 2% efficiency improvement over conventional alternating current models.
Conventional cooling setups experience power conversion losses across multiple stages that run compressor drives, pumps, and fans. In a typical 200 MW data center, Trane Technologies estimated that this 2% efficiency boost could free up to 1.8 MW of power for computing. That freed energy is sufficient to run up to fifteen 120 kW server racks or up to three 600 kW racks.
This demonstration marks an important step forward in rethinking how cooling infrastructure can integrate with emerging DC power architectures. By eliminating conversion losses and designing for higher DC voltage architectures, we are helping data center operators reduce the power needed by non-IT equipment and maximize compute capacity per megawatt.
